Information of charges

The “Information” (also called an Information Charging Sheet) is a formal legal document filed by the prosecution that outlines the specific criminal charges brought against a defendant after an arrest or investigation. It lists each count separately and identifies the exact California Penal Code sections allegedly violated, along with brief descriptions of the conduct being charged. It may also include special allegations or enhancements, such as firearm use, gang involvement, or prior convictions, which can increase potential penalties if proven. The purpose of the Information is to formally notify the defendant of the accusations, define the scope of the case for trial, and guide the court in understanding what must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. It serves as the foundation of the criminal case moving forward into arraignment, plea, and trial proceedings.
